Inspirational Monday: Spring Fever

photos of Abby Brothers from Fashion Gone Rogue
I got a fever and the only cure for it is Spring! Spring fashion editorials are killing me this weather is killing me...It's is so rainy here in the NYC. It's like the weather wants to be spring with the tempature today but it does not want to be sunny. I can not take this one day 50's the next day 30's deal. I want to froklic around in spring clothes. Why is this so difficult? Yes I will not stop complaining until the weather changes. I decided to paint my nails a pale purple to make myself feel better and in hopes if I start wearing spring colors the weather will change. Crazy? I know. But I can dream.

Apple Crisp + Outfit Post

Last night the bf and I stayed in and made dinner and desert and watched movies. He made some yummy hamburgers and spicy sweet potato fries. I worked on making the Apple Crisp desert which was amazing and amazingly easy. I got the recipe off of Food Network's website. I've had it since December but on the way back from Ikea we decided that we were going to bake it.

Ingredients

Filling:

  • 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped small
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Topping:

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

For the Filling:

  • Mix all the ingredients together. Place into 7 to 8-ounce ramekins.

For topping:

Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in large bowl. Blend the butter into the mixture until it forms pea size lumps. Stir in pecans and sprinkle over filling.

Bake crisps for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before serving.

It was soooo yummy! And we still have more then half of it still sitting our fridge waiting for me to eat it tonight while I watch the Oscars! Even though next time we make this I think I would even add some dry cranberries into the mix.

Sally Hansen Lace Up Salon Effects

Okay I'm not good with keeping nail polish on my nails. I had chipped the leopard print salon effects by opening a box (it was worth it since they were my new JC's) and on my over stuffed dresser draw. I also can not get enough of the Sally Hansen Salon Effects, I picked up the Lace Up ones last week at Duane Reade. Also, I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to buying new things as soon as I get something new I have this total itch to use it/wear it. This is also probably another reason why I couldn't wait to take off the leopard print ones. PS. taking off the salon effects is a bit hard....Anyway I actually did my nails Sunday night and so far they are lasting pretty well minus my right nail tumb and my two fingers on my left hand....

Hat: H&M
Jacket: Michael Kors

Dress: Forever21
Shoes: Aldo
Necklace: Forever21
Earrings: H&M

Scarf: no name

I'm obsessed over my H&M hat. I'm glad that I've had a few nicer days to be able to wear it. I'm so over this rollcoaster weather ride we have been on, today was in the high 40s which I will take over the 30s and below which we will be going back to. At work I was listening to OAR and all I could think about was spring dresses, sitting outside, and drinking margaritas. At least soon enough I'll be in Miami!!

I hope everyone is having a great week! Looking forward to the weekend! Anyone have any plans?

Abreu Rios Fall 2011

The likelyhood of you knowing the design duo Iris Abreu and Irene Rios from their label Abreu Rios is probably slim to none. This is where I step in and get to introduce you to them and their work. Thanks to the Nolcha Fashion Week event at the Empire Hotel I got the chance to view some of the fall collection and to meet the lovely designers.

A little bit of history behind the two: Iris and Irene are two New York based designers who run and own their luxury brand Abreu Rios. They created their namesake by taken their mother's madien names and putting them together: Abreu + Rios = Abreu Rios. According to Irene their mother's were there first fashion icons.

Now to their clothing! Their clothing is feminine and sophiscated but also has an edgeness to it. For their Fall 2011 collection they took inspiration from Old Hollywood, "we looked to the greats like Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor and Veronica Lake. Women who oozed glamour and were over-the-top fabulous" according to Irene. Their collection is just that, timeless, glamoured, and sophisticated. They used different materials to create a tweed like pattern that is reminisnce of Chanel (and we all know how timeless Chanel is). They also used jewel embellishments to establish glamour. The dresses have classic feminine cuts but the shoulder details give it a whole new feeling.

Their pieces are perfect for day to night looks from office to after hour cocktails. Elegant designs that flatter a woman's body. Also you can mix and match their clothing with other pieces you already have in your closet. Their pieces like the black button down shirt with shoulder detail can be dressed up with a skirt or dressed down with a pair of skinny jeans. Abreu Rios line is something that can become a stable in your wardrobe. Another great thing about this collection is that their pieces are timeless that you can wear them a year or 5 years or even 20 years from now and you still will look stylish. That's what I look for in clothing, pieces that will become stables for a long time in my closet.

My favorite pieces from this collection is the embellished blazer paired with the embellished maxi skirt also the black button down top with the shoulder details and the wine colored silk charmeuse pants with black glass buttons. What are the designers favorite looks? According to Irene "Iris' favorite piece are the wine colored silk charmeuse pants with black glass buttons. Mine is the dark grey silk chiffon blouse with shoulder draping and Swarovski crystal buttons." How about you what are your favorite looks from this collection?

My New York Couture Fashion Week Experience

New York Couture Fashion Week started in 2003 and has now expanded to multiple cities in the US like Palm City. There are multiple shows over a three day spand: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday showcases works from designers all over the world. These designers are skilled in luxury brands and couture.

I had the great opportunity to volunteer at these shows on Saturday and Sunday. Many peoples wouldn't get the appeal or would think I'm crazy to work on my days off but opportunities like this only come around so often. Also, these are the best ways to get to meet people and to really work in business when you don't work for the business. Lets just say the my feet and back are happy to be sitting on my big fluffy couch today.

Saturday I worked as an usher and sitting people. One of the best parts about this gig was being able to watch the shows and seeing some interesting dress wear from the crowd. The only time I got to sit was when there was a lag in between shows. There were shows at 4, 6, and 8 so at least we had some down time in between. Jamil Khansa started the series of shows with his beautiful dresses that literally sparkled. Sequins and beading were everywhere. One of the girls I had volunteered with said these dresses got her in the mind set to start looking for Prom Dress (yes she was that young and yes I felt that old). His dresses we nothing short but beautiful.

There were two designers that were showed back to back on Saturday at 4 oclock Suzie Turner and Nina Gleyzer. I really wish I had brought my camera that day but stupid me left it at home by accident. Suzie had this one gown that was made of feathers, I can't even begin to tell you or describe it to you so thankfully pictures from the show have been posted and you can see it on shawnpunch.com. Everyone that was there Saturday was still talking about this dress on Sunday. Every girl had the same thing in mind "that is my wedding dress."

The closer for Saturday night was Andres Aquino Couture who also is the founder and producer of Couture Fashion Week. So of course the Grand Ballroom in the Waldorf Astoria was packed for his show. His show was filled with Indian inspiration. Beautiful silk dresses with sequin embellishments. Most these dress fit perfectly in to a Indian wedding. He also had his model walk down the runway in 8 inch heels! Jeffrey Campbell's wach out for John Ashford's collection of 8 inch heels! These shoes were amazing! The had a thick platform and stick thin stellito heels. Thankfully I happened to have my camera with me on Sunday and John Ashford was still around for me to snap some pictures of his outrageous shoes.

Overall Saturday was not disappointing but I couldn't wait till Sunday since I planned on working backstage and I couldn't wait to see what other designers had in-store.

Working backstage at a show has taught me a lot between the different peronsalities that you will come across the mode swings of the designers and models. My day started at 1:30 and did not end till 9:30 which was the same as the day before but this was totally different. I had about 15 minutes of sit down time everything else was rushing around trying to get models dressed and clothes steamed. Of course right off the bat things were going wrong with the designers stuff we were working with. What dresses zipper broke which models we were hunting down for to get dressed. As stressful as it was I would still do it in a heart beat. Working in something fast pace and stressful as crazy as it sounds is fun and I feed of it. A screaming model screaming to get her dress on because she has to go back out I can deal with that. Fighting with a zipper bring it on. The only sad part is that I want to play dress up in all the beautiful clothes. And yesterday the backstage area was full of them. So many different designers (there were 8 designers total) with totally different taste. Some focused on culture, some focused on evening luxury wear, and some focus on the deconstruction of clothing. Each designer stood out in their own way. Some of my favorites were Alaric Designes which is a flower company who did three beautiful flower concept dresses and Edward Arsouni who closed the event with 32 pieces, all beautiful dresses including a beautiful wedding dress. All the designers on Sunday were truly amazing: House of Jola, Berrys Couture, Reedas, House of Farrah, Janerations, and Autumalin Atelier. Another highlight was working with Aminat Ayinde who was on America's Next Top Model. She was SUPER sweet and yesterday was her 24th bday!

Here are some backstage photos:
